Aeroseal Duct Sealing in Barrie

One end of the house is always cooler than the other. The room over the garage never keeps up. You’ve tried closing vents and nudging the thermostat, and you’re still living with uneven room temperatures. Often the reason is the ductwork itself: air that leaks out on the way and never reaches the room it was meant for.

We find the big problems first, fix them by hand, seal the rest from the inside with Aeroseal, then measure again. Both numbers go on your Aeroseal Seal Certificate. We serve Barrie and the rest of Simcoe County, including Innisfil and Orillia.

A recent Barrie job

We recently sealed the ducts in a home in Barrie. Before sealing, the duct leakage measured 49.1%. After sealing, it measured 5.7%.

Before we started the sealing, we went over the ductwork with our thermal camera. A thermal camera shows temperature differences, so warm or cool air escaping where it shouldn’t stands out on the screen. In this house, it led us to a duct that had come disconnected. You can see it in the first photo: the round duct has pulled away from the crimped end it’s supposed to fit over.

A disconnected duct is far too big a gap for Aeroseal, which seals gaps up to about 5/8 inch. So we fixed it by hand first, and only then started the Aeroseal sealing on the rest of the system.

The leakage left at the end was a little over a tenth of where it started.

These are measured numbers, not estimates. We test before we start and again after sealing, and every Aeroseal job ends with a Seal Certificate showing both. We never share our customers’ addresses.

How we find leaks before we seal

Aeroseal handles the small gaps. The big ones have to be found and fixed first, so that’s where we start. We use a few tools for it:

Anything too big for Aeroseal gets fixed by hand, and we’ll tell you about it before doing any extra work.

Where we work around Barrie

All of Barrie, including Allandale, Painswick, Holly, Ardagh and the east end. We serve Barrie and the rest of Simcoe County, including Innisfil and Orillia.

How it works

  1. Test first. We measure your duct leakage before we start.
  2. Look for big problems. We check the ductwork with a thermal camera, and a smoke test when it helps.
  3. Fix what’s too big for Aeroseal. Disconnected ducts and large gaps get repaired by hand.
  4. Block every register and seal from the inside. Each register gets covered so the sealant stays in the ducts, then the Aeroseal machine sends sealant mist through the system and closes the leaks from within.
  5. Test again and give you the Seal Certificate, with the before and after numbers in writing.

Most homes take about 4 hours for sealing, or about 6 hours with air balancing. See the full process →

What Aeroseal can’t fix

Aeroseal seals gaps up to about 5/8 inch. Bigger holes and disconnected ducts, like the one on the Barrie job, need a hand repair first. It’s not duct cleaning either: cleaning takes dust out, Aeroseal closes leaks. And it won’t make an undersized furnace or AC bigger. If the test shows sealing won’t help much, we’ll say so.

Barrie questions

What does a thermal camera show?

Temperature. It turns surface temperatures into a picture, so a spot that’s warmer or cooler than everything around it stands out. If heated or cooled air is getting out of a duct where it shouldn’t, that spot shows up on the screen. It doesn’t see through walls, but it tells us where to look. On a recent job in Barrie, it’s how we found a disconnected duct before we started sealing.

Why fix a disconnected duct before sealing?

Because Aeroseal can’t close it. Aeroseal seals gaps up to about 5/8 inch. A duct that’s come apart leaves a whole open end, so the sealant would just blow out of it. So we fix it by hand first, then seal everything else. In Barrie, the leakage went from 49.1% to 5.7%.

Will you tell me before doing extra work?

Yes. If we find something that needs a hand repair, like a disconnected duct, we’ll show you what we found and tell you before we do anything extra. If a wall or ceiling has to be opened to reach a duct, patching the drywall afterwards is up to the homeowner.

Do you still use a smoke test?

When it helps, yes. Theatrical smoke goes into the duct system, and wherever it comes out shows us where air is escaping. The thermal camera and the smoke test show us different things, so we pick whichever suits the house. On the Barrie job, the thermal camera is what found the problem.

How long does it take, and do I need to be home?

Most homes take about 4 hours for sealing, or about 6 with air balancing. If we find a disconnected duct that needs fixing first, that adds some time. Someone needs to let us in and be around at the start and the end.
